In poker, losing with a straight flush should hurt. At Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, Illinois, it turned into a huge payday.

The casino announced on October 29 that its Bad Beat Jackpot had been hit for $659,941.70. The hand came in a no-limit hold’em cash game, CardPlayer reports.

Here is how it played out. The board showed 10♦ 9♦ 4♣ 6♣ 8♦. One player held 7♦ 6♦ for a 10-high straight flush. That is a monster hand. But the other player held Q♦ J♦, which made a queen-high straight flush. The better hand won the pot, and the jackpot was triggered.

A bad beat jackpot rewards the player who loses with a very strong hand. So the biggest share went to the “loser.” According to the casino’s post, quoted by PokerWired, the losing hand received $329,974.70. The winning hand received $164,985.

The rest of the table was not left out. A table share of $27,497 went to each of the six other players, just for being dealt in. In total, eight players split the prize.

CardPlayer explains how these jackpots grow. The house takes $1 from each pot and adds it to the prize. It also notes that the odds of hitting even one straight flush are about 1 in 3,200 hands. Two in the same hand is far rarer.

PokerWired adds a few details from a Two Plus Two forum post. It says the hand reportedly came at about 1:30 a.m. on October 29 in a $1/$3 game. The same post said another player had left the table about ten minutes earlier. After the payout, the jackpot reset to $250,683.60.

It is still not a US record. In August 2022, a sister property, Rivers Casino Pittsburgh, paid a bad beat jackpot of more than $1.2 million after four aces lost to a royal flush, PokerWired and SpadePoker report.
