Maryland Tells SpeedSweeps to Stop Serving the State
Published · Gamebridge News
Maryland has sent another warning to the sweepstakes world. This time the target is a site called SpeedSweeps.
The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission sent a Notice to Cease and Desist dated November 2, 2026. The letter was published on the regulator’s own website. It tells SpeedSweeps to immediately stop all unauthorized online gaming activity in Maryland.
The letter explains the regulator’s view in plain terms. It says the only real-money online gaming now legal in Maryland is mobile sports wagering by licensed operators and online fantasy sports by registered operators. Nothing else, it says, is currently legal online in the state.
The commission says it reviewed the SpeedSweeps site. It says the site offers online casino gaming, poker and sweepstakes to people who are physically in Maryland. According to the letter, those offerings contain the three elements of gaming: consideration, chance and prize. Under Maryland law, the letter says, gaming is illegal unless it is expressly authorized.
SpeedSweeps has been given 10 days from the date of the letter to reply by email. The reply must confirm that it will stop offering casino gaming, poker and sweepstakes in Maryland. It must also give a date when operations will end, plus a wind-down plan.
The letter also includes a warning. If SpeedSweeps does not comply, the commission says that could hurt its chances of getting any future license, registration or certification from the commission. The notice is signed by Michael Eaton, the commission’s Managing Director of Gaming.
This is not Maryland’s first move of this kind. In March 2025, iGaming Business reported that the same agency sent a letter to VGW, the company behind Chumba Casino and LuckyLand Slots, also signed by Eaton. These letters are the regulator’s position. They are not court rulings, and SpeedSweeps has not been found to have broken any law.
